Frequently asked questions
Infrared Therapy
Infrared therapy uses specific wavelengths of invisible light to generate heat that penetrates deep into muscle, joint, and connective tissue — typically reaching two to three centimetres below the skin's surface. A conventional heat pad or hot water bottle only warms the surface of the skin and provides temporary comfort. Infrared therapy works below the surface, reaching deep into muscles and joints to help reduce inflammation, improve circulation, and encourage natural healing. At The Pain Management Clinic in Angmering, it is offered as a professional therapeutic treatment, often in combination with our other therapies.
Infrared therapy works by stimulating cellular mitochondria, encouraging more healing activity, while also producing nitric oxide — a vital signalling molecule that relaxes blood vessels, improves circulation, and helps reduce inflammation. This combination of increased cellular energy and improved blood flow delivers oxygen and nutrients more effectively to injured or inflamed tissue, supporting the body's own recovery processes. The effect is cumulative — many clients find that benefits build gradually across a course of sessions.
Infrared therapy may be beneficial for chronic back pain, muscle tension and soreness, joint pain and stiffness, arthritis, fibromyalgia, sports injuries, and post-surgical recovery. Research confirms that infrared therapy may help with fibromyalgia, arthritis, and chronic myofascial pain through modulation of inflammatory responses. At The Pain Management Clinic, it is often used as part of a combined treatment approach alongside PEMF therapy or clinical massage. As with all complementary therapies, individual responses vary and we always recommend discussing your specific condition with our team before or at the time of your booking.
Most clients find infrared therapy deeply comfortable and warming — a gentle, penetrating heat that feels quite different from a sauna or steam room. There is no discomfort, no noise, and no need to undress beyond what you are comfortable with. Many people find the steady warmth deeply relaxing and use sessions as a period of quiet restoration. Sessions at The Pain Management Clinic are conducted in a calm, private environment at our clinic at Ham Manor Golf Club, West Sussex.
Infrared therapy is generally very safe and well tolerated by most. It is not recommended during pregnancy, for those with active cancer, severe cardiovascular conditions, or acute inflammation in the area being treated. Those with photosensitivity or certain skin conditions should consult their GP before booking. Our practitioners at The Pain Management Clinic conduct a health assessment before your first session to confirm the therapy is appropriate for you. If you have any questions, please contact us before booking and we will be happy to advise.
Both are non-invasive, drug-free therapies but they work through entirely different mechanisms. PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field) therapy uses low-frequency electromagnetic pulses to stimulate cellular repair and reduce inflammation at a systemic level — it effectively recharges the body's cells. Infrared therapy uses heat generated by infrared light to warm deep tissue, improving local circulation and reducing inflammation in a targeted area. The two therapies complement each other well, and at The Pain Management Clinic they are often recommended together as part of a personalised treatment plan.
Many clinical protocols use short sessions that repeat over time, because the benefits of infrared therapy can build cumulatively. For acute injury recovery, a short course of sessions over two to three weeks is often recommended. For chronic conditions, regular ongoing sessions tend to produce the most sustained results. Our practitioners at The Pain Management Clinic will advise on the most appropriate frequency and number of sessions following your initial consultation in our clinic in Angmering.
Yes — and infrared therapy works best when it is not treated as a standalone approach, as chronic pain often involves more than one factor. Combining infrared therapy with other strategies supports a more holistic pathway to recovery. At The Pain Management Clinic, infrared therapy is frequently paired with PEMF Mat Therapy, deep tissue massage, and Craniosacral Therapy. Our practitioners will work with you to design a personalised combination that addresses both the physical and emotional dimensions of your condition.
